Beware of Firewood Operators who may be short measuring
We feel we need to make firewood consumers in the Geelong region be aware there are many firewood operators that are short measuring so you most likely aren’t getting what you think you have paid for. Over recent years we have purchased firewood from local retailers who we suspected were selling inaccurate measurements of firewood and therefore ripping off consumers. Here are some examples.
- A local operator claiming to sell by tonne (weight) We had a tonne of wood delivered and after measuring it on our trade approved weighbridge and in dollar amounts it was short $50, We requested an invoice and was reluctantly provided with one with no business details [cash payment only] also they don’t have approved scales – they guess the weight.
- Another operator claiming to sell by the cubic metre. We had 2 cubic metres delivered and after measuring it in dollar value it was short approx. $50 and again no tax invoice was supplied. (cash payment only)
- After measuring another local operator who claimed to deliver 6 cubic metres in a caged trailer it was only 3.9 cubic metres. This equates to a $200 shortfall. Again, no tax invoice was supplied [cash payment only]. This same operator now delivers firewood in a truck and claims to sell firewood by weight, but they don’t have scales. (they guess). I also have measured this truck and it simply is not big enough to hold the weight they claim to sell.
- We had a customer who was requesting to purchase $200 of firewood daily from our yard, this was unusual and upon investigation we discovered he was reselling it as 2 cubic metres and charging $320 With this knowledge we stopped selling firewood to him.
There also has been many other operators we have checked out over the years that have short delivered the amount either by the cubic metre or by tonnes (weight). Unfortunately it is hard to spot a shady operator as many can have a business name and sometimes a website so can appear to be quite legitimate, a telling sign is no business address just a mobile phone number they only accept cash and don’t provide a tax invoice with the business name, ABN, address and the volume of firewood sold. Also, if they claim to sell by weight make sure they are using trade approved scales.
At Riverina Redgum Firewood Supplies we take pride in selling quality sustainable redgum and giving you the correct measurement every time so we get very frustrated with operators who are ripping off consumers and ask that you please consider your purchase carefully.
