TONNE VS CUBIC METRE

Tonne [Weight]

According to the department of national measurement institute when measuring firewood by tonne (weight) it must be weighed with trade approved scales and have NMI approval number. It is an extremely accurate way of measurement.  At Riverina Redgum Firewood Supplies all our firewood is measured using trade approved scales with a NMI number S-418.

Unfortunately, there are retailers in the Geelong area that are selling firewood by the tonne [weight] without using trade approved scales or scales at all [they guess]

Cubic Metre

According to the department of national measurement institute When measuring firewood by cubic metre,it should be neatly stacked with as few gaps as possible (not thrown together randomly).

We believe the issue with most firewood retailers selling by the cubic metre is they often consider the wood thrown into the back of a trailer/truck/bin with a small amount of manual adjusting as being ‘stacked with as few gaps as possible’ so therefore the difference between suppliers can be significant. (We believe approximately 25%) This is why Riverina Redgum Firewood supplies will not price compare retailers selling by cubic metre.

We frequently get asked what the difference between a tonne and cubic metre is. As a guide only 1 tonne of seasoned redgum is approximately 2 cubic metres stacked with as few gaps as possible or approximately 2.7 cubic metres loose.

It is hard to work out which operators are measuring firewood incorrectly. They may have a business name, a website, claim to measure firewood correctly and seem to be legitimate. We believe with our 27 years of experience of selling firewood we have come up with a way of eliminating the risk of purchasing firewood from operators that short measure.

Questions to ask

  • How do they measure the firewood if by tonne [weight], do they use trade approved scales with a NMI number?
  • If measured by cubic metre, do they stack with as few gaps as possible?
  • Do they have a business address or just a mobile phone number?
  • Will they provide a tax invoice with business name, address and volume of firewood sold?
  • Will they only accept cash?

Remember there are operators that will claim to measure firewood correctly but there is a common trend with operators that short measure.

At Riverina Redgum Firewood supplies we take pride in selling quality sustainable redgum and giving you the correct measurement every time so we get very frustrated with operators who are ripping off consumers and ask that you please consider your purchase carefully.
